Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to utilize art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her life, but was able to spend summers with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a young student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one member of the jury and examine their junk. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as an intern at an unassuming studio. In 1999, she launched her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
